Heading North to New Jersey for an early morning delivery. I have been listening to the Roberts confirmation hearings on Sirius, fascinating. It is interesting to hear the partisanship expressed by some of our elected officials. The democrats have been using their time to make speeches and express their own opinions and the Republicans have been asking soft ball questions and making speeches in praise of Roberts. Neither side is doing Justice to Roberts and the nation. They need to be asking real questions and making a real effort to find out how Roberts will handle the job as Chief Justice. This is not a decision to taken lightly and play games with. Decisions made by Roberts will have effects on this nation for generations to come.
The blame game on the disaster in New Orleans is getting heated. The governor of Louisiana is blaming the President for the slow response of FEMA, although it turns out that she failed to request federal help and allow the National Guard to come in under federal authority. The most recent trick she pulled was claiming that the body recovery was too slow and FEMA had once again failed to do its job, as it turns, Louisiana state officials told FEMA a week ago that the would handle the recovery of bodies in LA, so FEMA left it up to them. This governor seems to be a total incompetent, just another example of the corruption that has been a part of Louisiana’s politics for years. The governor seems to want to pass all of the blame, as well as the expense, onto the federal government. She has failed to take any responsibility for the failures to carry out the emergency plans that she is responsible for. I agree that the fed was slow in taking charge of what was going on, but some of that was that they were being blocked by the governor. The president should have been watching and making sure things got done instead of assuming that Blanco would do the job. But the responsibility for what happened for the first couple of days should be placed on the mayor and governor.
I hope everyone is having a good week and stay safe.
